Intro

Nivon is a large, open association that enables green and social leisure activities. The organisation has existed for more than 100 years and runs almost entirely on volunteers. They manage dozens of nature houses, campsites, hiking trails, and organise a wide range of activities.

For Nivon, Super Interactive developed a digital platform that supports its complete network of volunteer organisations. What started as a fragmented landscape of local branches, hiking routes, accommodation, and trips has been brought together into one central application in which 79 websites now operate side by side.

The platform gives every volunteer group digital autonomy while preserving consistency in design, technology, and structure across the organisation. In that way, the digital environment fits seamlessly with Nivon’s culture as an association.

The association

Nivon consists of different types of volunteer groups, each with its own role and responsibilities:

  • Local branches
    Branches organise cultural, social, and especially nature-focused activities at regional level. They operate in cities, regions, and provinces and form the local heart of the association.

  • Route managers
    Volunteers maintain hiking routes across the country and make sure they remain accessible and up to date.

  • Accommodation managers
    Along various routes, Nivon also manages nature accommodation. These are run by volunteers and range from campsites and rooms in nature houses to full holiday cottages.

  • Travel groups
    Volunteers organise trips and walking holidays in the Netherlands and abroad, for young and old, always centred around experiencing nature.

That makes Nivon far from a traditional organisation with one central communication line. It is an extensive network of independent volunteer groups. At the same time, there is a shared need: room for autonomy in day-to-day management, and a digital environment that clearly feels like Nivon everywhere. That tension creates an especially interesting digital challenge.

How do you create local digital freedom within a national association?

Nivon’s diverse structure makes digitalisation anything but straightforward. A local branch fundamentally works differently from a team managing nature accommodation, while travel groups and route managers each have their own information needs and dynamics. On top of that, some branches and volunteer groups had already set up their own websites over the years. So the challenge was not just organisational diversity, but also a fragmented digital landscape.

All of these parts needed their own place online, but still under one recognisable brand and within the same digital environment. At the same time, management is in the hands of volunteers who are primarily content-focused and not necessarily digitally experienced. The challenge was therefore to develop a platform that respects the different organisational roles within Nivon without exposing the underlying complexity to the people working with it.

A perfect balance between standardisation and flexibility

For each type of branch, we designed its own template and content structure, fully aligned with the way the volunteer groups work:

  • Branch websites focus on local activities and regional news. Volunteers can independently manage their agenda and posts here.

  • Hiking route websites provide rich route information supported by an interactive map. Managers can share route changes and warnings in real time. Routes are divided into stages with extra information about facilities and points of interest along the way, and GPX files are available for visitors to download.

  • Accommodation websites show the different types of stays on offer. Through the integrated TOMM widget, visitors can book directly, while volunteers keep the information about their location up to date themselves.

  • Travel websites are built around organising trips and walking holidays. Alongside an overview of planned trips, with filters by activity type, accommodation, duration, and period, there is space for detailed travel reports in which volunteers look back on previous journeys.

At the same time, all parts are visually and technically connected within the wider Nivon design system. Existing websites could also be integrated into this platform, bringing a fragmented digital landscape together into one coherent system.

Within this environment, all parts share the same digital foundation: volunteers can manage news, activities, and editorial pages themselves, while the overall structure, navigation, and design remain consistent across the organisation.

The national website as the central hub of the network

That shared foundation translates into a clear platform structure. There is a distinction between the national website and the network of underlying volunteer-group sites.

The national site, Nivon.nl, serves as the central access point and provides overviews of all parts of the association: branches, hiking routes, accommodation, trips, and walking holidays. Trips are loaded in through a central API so information always stays up to date. The agenda combines activities from all underlying sites into one overview. Accommodation can be booked directly through the integrated TOMM booking widget. The national site also includes a webshop where hiking and cycling guides are sold, among other products.

In this way, the platform supports not only Nivon’s communication, but also the day-to-day organisation of activities, routes, stays, and trips, all within one connected digital ecosystem.

Impact and ongoing development

Today, 79 websites run within the same application. The shared digital environment makes it easy for new branches and other organisation types to join. As a result, isolated systems and digital islands have disappeared, the visual identity is consistent everywhere, and management remains clear and manageable.

Nivon is an association that is constantly evolving. Volunteers regularly launch new initiatives in the field of sustainable leisure. With this platform, the organisation now has a digital foundation that supports not only its current structure, but also future growth and new types of activity.

The platform continues to evolve in close collaboration with the association. During volunteer days, people share their experiences using the websites and discuss ideas and improvements. These practical insights provide valuable input for further optimisation, ensuring the platform continues to match the needs of the people who work with it every day.

Nivon for everyone

Nivon is there for everyone who cares deeply about nature. That open and inclusive identity is also reflected in the digital environment. When building the platform, we paid close attention to accessibility and ease of use so the different websites work well for a broad target audience.

Volunteers fill the websites with content themselves, but the underlying structure remains clear and easy to navigate everywhere. This keeps the platform manageable for the organisation and accessible to the people Nivon ultimately exists for.
